Without Drapes is It Curtains?

Curtains form the most important part of your home décor. Imagine a house without curtains. It is like a man without clothes or a flower without petals or trees without leaves. It will be an incomplete home. Curtains give your house a furnished look. They dress up your windows and, most important of all, they protect your house from sunlight and looks from unwanted people into your family peace. Curtains come in a variety of fabrics and designs. You can get normal curtains for your house or expensive designer ones. From silk to cottons to satins to nets to lace to nylon you name it and you will get it, in all fabrics, simple to rich, thick to diaphanous, anything that you want.

Shower Curtains

As the name suggests, shower curtains are used in the bathroom around the shower area to keep the water from getting all over the bathroom floor. This helps you to keep your bathroom dry and clean at all times. Different synthetic or natural materials determine the different types of shower curtains. Polyester and vinyl shower curtains are waterproof and inexpensive. If you have a bathroom which is luxurious this type of curtain will not match the décor of your room. Curtains made of cotton and linen looks plush and elegant but they mildew if they get damp. You can combine vinyl with cotton for attractiveness and for utility. Vinyl shower curtains come in every imaginable color, pattern and motif. This makes them adaptable to all kinds of styles from the bathroom of your master bedroom to guest's room to children's bathroom.

Popular themes include rubber ducks, fish, sea shells, sail boats, balloons, clouds, or any simple patterned design. The background can be clear, so you can keep an eye on your children when they shower, or it can be an opaque shade. The advantage of vinyl and polyester curtains is that they keep the water inside the tub instead of it splashing onto the ground. Fabric shower curtains are permanent additions to the functions and décor of a bath room. Some are designed to match towels and bathmats. Some textiles have been treated with stain resistors and waterproof coatings to combat moisture, as they are more likely to absorb splashes. Hemp shower curtains provide the best of both worlds: cotton and vinyl, the heavy fabric is made of plant fiber like linen or cotton. However hemp is naturally antibacterial and anti fungal so it resists mildew and soap stains.

Kitchen Curtains

Kitchens have come a long way from the time when necessity and safety dictated that they be located outside the home. Through the years kitchens have evolved based on the needs and demands of the family and today era kitchens must be multifunctional. The most important thing while doing curtains for the kitchen is that these curtains should not obscure the entire kitchen concept. It is important to make sure that the cabinets and counter tops are in perfect coordination with the curtains you choose for your kitchen. When you choose the color for your kitchen curtains make sure you do that on a sunny day to make sure that it gives you the look you want. It is best not to choose synthetic or nylon kitchen curtains for safety reasons. Natural fabric like cotton is usually recommended for kitchen windows.

Window Curtains

A house with big windows and beautiful curtains in bright hues is everyone's dream. Window curtains come in all materials, colors and textures. You will have a myriad of designs to choose your window curtains from. There are a few things you should keep in mind when you go to select curtains for your window: the color of the curtain should compliment the color of the wall of the room, if your room is small you should go for light colors and if the room is big you should for dark colors as it makes your room look spacious yet compact.

The sunnier side of your house should have thick curtains to block the sunlight from heating up your room too much and on the other side you can always use fabrics like net or lace. The design that you choose completely depends on which room you are doing the curtains in. If it is the kid's room then you should choose something like cartoons or alphabets or numbers or animals etc. If it's the master bedroom then the curtains should add to the grace of the room, you can have big motifs or designs and the guest room curtains should be subtle and in warm colors. The design completely depends on your liking but you should also remember that the functionality of the curtain should be maintained.

Country Curtains

Window coverings come in so many different varieties today that it may be hard to decide on what you want. The decision may come down to personal taste but you can help yourself by doing some research on different varieties of window coverings. One popular type of window covering is the roman shade which is also known as country curtains. They are flat shades with dowels slotted horizontally up the back so they can be pulled up into soft horizontal folds. Roman shades give a clean modern look to your window space.

Curtain rods

No matter how good your curtains are, without curtain rods you just cannot put them in place. Curtain rods hold the curtains from the window top and let the curtain fall to its full length. You should first determine if you want to mount your curtain rods on the window casing or on the wall. You can choose the color of the rods to match the color of the wall or the curtains. The brackets that you choose for the rods can range from simple to intricate ones. The choice is completely yours and make sure you choose the best keeping in mind both your taste and your pocket.

Display Ideas for Inside Your Flower Shop

I have three charming ideas for displays. At times it seems like a hard and a daunting task to come up with new display ideas. I always welcome fun and unique ideas to display floral designs and plants. I anticipate you will enjoy these. I hope these are useful to your store as well.

1) Start with some wire mesh. Cut a piece large enough so that when connected in a circle you will have a 10-11" circle. Place a clear plant tray that is large enough to go over the top of the cage of wire mesh you have just made. You have made your first wire pedestal. Make at least five of these at varying heights to complete one display area. This type of display piece would be perfect for silk flower arrangements, basket gardens, or gift basket of different types. To give a garden look from these pedestals, place herbs in clay pots on the pedestals and accent around the cages with herb and garden books for sale, flower seeds, and garden tools; maybe even potting soil and baskets. Very unique and interesting. Place several of these three to five pedestal displays around your shop. Also these wire cages could be used for a grand summer window display. Accent with plants and country folk art. Stuffed animals would be very cute around these cages, maybe cows, ducks, bunnies, and chickens.

2) I like to use wooden crates for display. My customers even want to buy the crates themselves and I have sold them. These can be made easily from a bundle of lathes and scrap wood in the size of your choice for the top and bottoms. I stand some crates upright and some on their sides. The crates can also be draped with fabric for some color. Dish gardens, silk arrangements, and pottery and baskets fill in the crates nicely. These crates are so versatile; they can be used in display for almost anything.

3) Shower curtains for a window display. No, I am not crazy, yet... Shower curtains come in so many designs and colors. They can be a great backdrop for that special display. They are fairly inexpensive and can be used, put away and brought out again to be used in a different way. Think about what you want to highlight in your floral shop. You could even shop thrift stores for this type of backdrop. Just make sure your shower curtain is bright and shiny clean. Next, take some craft foam and cut out some circles of different sizes. Spray paint them a coordinating color. Punch two holes in each circle, opposite each other and string clear fishing line through the holes.

These circles can be hung from the ceiling at varying heights. Place on the circles potted silk green plants you have for sale. Use as a display for seasonal holidays such as Valentine's Day, placing red, white, pink, and lavender everything on the circles. Use some of the wooden crates from display suggestion #2 above on the bottom for the lower half of the display, and use the hanging circles displaying your Valentine designs. The crates can be spray painted red, white, pink, etc. as needed. Pull it all together with the matching shower curtain for the backdrop, the coordinating crates, and the hanging circles to show off your feature items.

Look all around you. As you are driving, as you walk around, as you shop, see objects in a different fashion. An old gate can be a great backdrop for a dried floral wreath. Paint a window screen, put it on an easel and use to display earrings for a quick add on sale. Gaze all about and you will find treasures you can use to make your flower shop distinctive.

Create the Right Splash With Bathroom Accessories

When decorating your bathroom, it is important to choose practical and beautiful bathroom accessories that also enhance the style of the room. It is this kind of attention to detail that separates a bathroom with charm and character from one that is strictly ho-hum. Bathrooms have come a long way from the days of strictly utilitarian design and use, and are now viewed as sanctuaries to which people escape and indulge in personal pampering.

The Powder Room - Go Wild

A powder room will be located where it is convenient for the use of guests, and is usually a small room. This means you can opt for such expensive decorating touches as crown molding and high-priced wallpaper which may not be affordable for the larger bathrooms in your home. As well, no bathtub or shower means there are no moisture concerns when selecting materials and decorating touches. You can hang a nice piece of framed artwork without worrying that dampness will destroy it. This is the bathroom in which you can use vibrant colors, and display luxury collections on a counter or shelf.

The Family Bathroom - Make Sharing Easier

Even if the family bathroom is of average size or larger, it may seem small because of the number of people using it. If this is the case, incorporate some creative storage ideas and pull out all the stops in creating the illusion of spaciousness. If there are young children in the family, you need to pay special attention to safety features as well.

* To make the room appear larger, choose light, cool colors for walls and trim, such as buttery or cream colored walls with white or beige trim, and make sure your bathroom accessories are also color coordinated: towels, shower curtains, bath mats, rugs, the clothes hamper, scales, and storage bins. Oversized mirrors can also enlarge the appearance of the room.

* Make sure there is at least one drawer or cupboard that can be locked so that medicines and other poisonous items can be safely stored.

* Attach a grab bar to wall studs located by the bathtub or in the shower stall as another good safety feature.

* In this day of pedestal sinks, storage has been sacrificed for style but do not accept defeat. If there is a closet of any kind, buy a closet organizer to hold towels and facecloths, and bins for personal items, one for each family member. If there is no space for a closet, add open shelves over the toilet, or any place they will fit, and use decorative bins to hold various personal items.

* If you can add a second wash basin, it will help relieve some of the bathroom traffic problems.

The Master Bathroom - You Deserve All the Luxury You Can Afford

The master bathroom, depending on its size and your pocketbook, can incorporate decorative ideas from both powder rooms and family bathrooms, and can include more luxurious bathroom accessories since it is generally an adult-only room.

If it is large enough, you can turn the master bathroom into a personal spa, with an oversized, jetted bathtub and an in-line water heater. Steam showers and rain bars are other elegant amenities, as is radiant heating and towel warmers.

Make A Plan

There are bathroom furnishings and bathroom accessories available to fit any budget. Before you begin to decorate or remodel, list what you need to do, what you would like to do and what you would do if you could find the money. Estimate the cost of materials and tools for the do-it-yourselfer - if you are one - and the cost of a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, and a painter, if you are not. Decide what you can afford to do and whether you should go for an economical quick fix, or a more expensive major overhaul.

Paint, wall coverings, and flooring materials for all bathrooms except the powder room must be appropriately chosen for durability and water resistance. A water-base paint is acceptable throughout most of the interior of your home; however, interior painting of the bathroom requires an oil-base - enamel - paint. In general, materials that stand up well to excess moisture are:

* Plastic laminate

* Vinyl-coated wallpaper

* Semi-gloss enamel paint

* Masonry block

* Cast marble

When choosing colors, remember that light cool colors will make a room appear larger, as will painting walls and ceilings the same color. If you have a large room with a high ceiling, a dark color on the ceiling will lower it.

The Quick Fix

* Paint or wallpaper the walls.

* Paint the trim and the bathroom cabinets and shelves.

* Replace bathroom faucets.

* Color coordinate bathroom accessories: towels and face cloths, the shower curtain, scales, hamper, and storage bins, rugs, and bathmats.

* Replace the mirror or paint the frame.

* Replace lighting fixtures.

* Add decorative, color coordinated items to hold cotton balls, swabs, bath
salts, hand lotions, etc.

The Complete Overhaul

As well as the quick fix:

* Install new fixtures: bathtub, shower stall, toilet, and sink.

* Replace bathroom cabinets, and bathroom countertops

* Choose new flooring.

* Install new bathroom faucets and showerheads.

Select Your Favorite Style

When you have settled on a decorating style that reflects your taste and your lifestyle, choose your bathroom accessories so that they will reinforce the look you want to achieve. There are three main styles, and, of course, you can develop one that is very personal.

1) Contemporary

The contemporary style demands clean straight lines and solid colors. Choose plain fixtures, natural wood for cabinets, stainless steel faucets, and decorative materials of wood, stone or tile. The room should look sleek and clutter-free, which means a minimum number of items on display and on the counter. Select streamlined bathroom accessories.

2) Country

The warm, cozy, country style calls for pastel earth colors and vintage-looking fixtures.
You can go wild with floral patterns and fabrics, and use wicker for towel and toilet tissue baskets, and for the clothes hamper. Collections of bottles, framed botanicals, stencils on the wall, and other such decorative items are appropriate.

3) Traditional

Glamour and elegance are hallmarks of the traditional style and you should select porcelain fixtures with gold, silver, or brass faucets and fittings. Think floral fabrics and groupings of treasured collections, and use gold accents and gilded finishes wherever you can.

4) A Personal Theme

A collection of seashells, or your fondness for cactus plants or birds might dictate a particular motif that delights you and other family members. Bathroom decorating and bathroom accessories can revolve around this theme and inspire particular color choices and the inclusion of elements from the sea, the desert, favorite animals or birds, a fantasy world, or anything that has captured your imagination.

There are countless products and materials designed to enhance the beauty, comfort and convenience of bathrooms. When it's time to decorate, you can really have fun!

Gay Arabs Speak Out About Their Lives

Homosexuality in the Arab world is a topic so volatile that in some countries death is the penalty. Yet gradually and very cautiously gay Arabs are coming out of the closet with increasing confidence. Spanning across 22 countries with a combined population of 323 million, the Arab world is not only connected through its language but is also linked through numerous gay Arab websites, chat rooms, and blogs.

However, for gay Arab Americans, even though they live with much greater personal freedoms they often still find themselves conflicted between their sexual, religious, ethnic/cultural and national identities. Meet Issam Khoury of Washington, DC and Ramy Eletreby of Los Angeles. They both are gay Arab men but each with a totally different path and background. However both men have a remarkable clarity and an agreement on the crucial issues which impact them the most.

Issam Khoury

A refugee by birth and by war, Issam Khoury has seen and experienced a broad cross-section of the world. Both of his parents were born and raised in Palestine but because of the politics surrounding the Israeli occupation, Issam was forced to be born and raised in Kuwait until the age of 13. "I learned what it meant to be different in being in Kuwait because as a non Kuwait you are always perceived different" he explains.

But when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, Issam's family was forced to live in Cypress where Issam finished his schooling. Again he felt the unspoken words and perception of being different in another country.

As a youth Issam began to become more aware of his burgeoning homosexuality. "I always knew I was attracted to men. I knew from the days when I was living in Kuwait which to me debunks the myth that many Arabs would like to have that this does not exist in our part of the world because it does. When I moved to Cypress in 95' I found myself becoming sexually active and that's how I knew that this was here to stay" he reveals.

Issam later attended college in the US, first graduating from Virginia Tech, then onward to Ohio State to earn a masters degree and then forward to American University where he's currently earning a doctorate in cultural studies.

He admits that it wasn't until college that he started to become fully aware of his identity as an "outwardly gay man and not someone who engages in sex with other men" he explains. In many ways his college years helped him to adopt a holistic identity that was related to his sexual orientation, but this was only the first step.

He reveals that his journey still was "very difficult because I have no examples I don't have any James Baldwin's we don't have any Gloria Anzaldua's, we don't have any of those in the Arab community. There are gay people out there and they're out and they're proud, but they do not write, they do not represent, they have not laid the foundation for a community in the same way that American ethnic communities have had on varying levels."

As a result, Issam found nurturing support within the African American community adding that he was "adopted" by many black people and that "in the black community...I found my identity as a man of color.

I really found my identity as a gay man of color through reading E. Lynn Harris. I found it inspiring to read about men of color loving other men and color. I found my identity and what it could be to be in a relationship with another man of color and how beautiful that could be and how celebrated that could be without having to be ashamed of it."

In terms of his Arab identity, Issam says that he found his Arabic-self through his masters degree program at Ohio State where he studied Arab literature. He openly admits that he had a "big aversion" to white people after being called a "sand nigger, camel jockey, and towel head" during his college years. So this new academic program gave him both affirmation and confirmation of who he really was, thus casting away all labels and stereotypes.

"It was in my masters program that I found myself as an Arab man" he proudly states. However, the reconciliation of being Arab, Gay and Christian was still a long, arduous and complicated process. After coming out to his parents, he we went back into the closet for six years.

"It took a lot of internal work for me to merge my Arabic and my gay identities. It took a lot of soul searching, it took a lot of research; delving into the issue of Arabic and gay but it's very slow. We have a lot issues of pride in Arabic community and pride is related to family honor and if somebody is gay then you shame family honor and therefore these issues are not widely talked about but discussed in closed circles" he shares.

Because of his journey of transformation and reconciliation Issam decided to enroll in a cultural studies doctoral program because he recognized that he belonged to too many diverse groups to limit himself to just one identity or concentration. "The United States thrives on identity politics; it's the capital of what I call the check box on the application because you always have to be something you always have to be categorized as something."

Further, Issam's own diversity and his desire to learn about the diversity of others led him out of his personal check box. He's a member of a black fraternity and is currently learning to speak Spanish, all in an effort to broaden his exposure and understanding of culture and diversity.

Ramy Eletreby

Born and raised in sunny Southern California behind the conservative and affluent curtain of Orange County, Ramy Eletreby, who is of Egyptian descent, grew up the youngest of three children. While both of his parents were born and raised in Egypt, Ramy's perspective has a distinct American flair. He says that he was raised "conservative and Muslim" and that his upbringing has helped shaped him to where he is today.

Ramy's gay awakening actually began around the age of 15. He remembers attending a play in Los Angeles that centered around boxing. During a locker room scene, one of the boxers actually showered on stage. It was Ramy's first time seeing a naked man.

"I was flustered and blushing and all that stuff and I just knew that if I had a reaction like that it must mean something. I never had such a strong reaction of anybody like that. I could not avert my eyes but deep down I knew I should not be enjoying it."

Interestingly enough, Ramy did not act out sexually on his urges. Instead he went through a personal journey seeking to reconcile his sexuality with his Muslim beliefs. "I went through a lot of self exploration, a lot questions, and a lot of confusion" he explains.

Similar to the path of many other gays, Ramy eventually mustered up enough courage to start coming out to his friends. After an eight year period he had come out to just about everyone in his life with the exception of his own family, however that was about to change in a very public way in the summer of 2005.

A budding actor, Ramy decided to accept a role at a Hollywood theater portraying a gay Arab. However certain Arab community groups got wind of the play and its gay content and started to protest. Meanwhile the LA Times bloodhounds sniffed out the story and surrounded down playhouse to do what eventually became a major news story about the play, its gay content, the controversy, and the fact that its lead actor, Ramy was a gay man.

When the story hit, Ramy estimates it took four people reading it before the news was promptly delivered to his parents. Additional attention came when Advocate Magazine also did a spread on him. It was an extremely stressful and an emotionally raw time for him, but today he's out to everyone and living his life authentically.

And after many years of wrestling with both his spirituality and his sexuality, Ramy has finally found the peace that he's been searching for since he was 15. "I've just come to the conclusion that not everything is perfect. This religion that I was raised in is not perfect" he explains. He adds that people who subscribe to a religious belief system must "apply however much you can apply to your life and since I know I cannot change certain facts about who I am....if I choose to have a religion like Islam it needs to be as much as I can take of it."

Today Ramy works for a gay publication in Los Angeles where he says it has helped him to find his gay identity. However, he sees no back and forth competing of his multiple identities of being gay, Arab, and Muslim. "I've never allowed it to be a fight; it's just part of my daily reality. I'm an Arab American who happens to be raised Muslim who considers himself for the most part Muslim but I am an American who is of Arab descent."

He adds that "your identity is who you are at any given moment. There's never a day where I'm not Muslim or don't not view myself as a product of Muslims. I'm able to go through every day and realize which parts of my identify are speaking up and how I can filter those to come to a focused stop process through any given situation."

Advice to Young Gay Arabs

While Issam and Ramy were able to move above and beyond the conflicts of their multiple identities, there are many other young gay Arabs who are still baffled by it and struggle with it daily.

Issam gives this piece of advice to gay Arab youth. "You are not alone, you are not the only gay Arab person out there. You're not the only young man or young woman who's struggling with this. Find where the myth is; find the fact and where the two separate. Do your research. Dispel the myths for yourself."

Ramy agrees adding that "the only person that you really need to listen to is yourself. You cannot allow people who have taught you as a child, or your parents, or family members, religious scholars, siblings, friends. You cannot allow people to make decisions about your life and what is right about you without you involved. So do not act outside of your best interest."

Walk in Shower - Feel Rejuvenated

Walk in showers have become the most sought after term when it comes to bathroom design and renovation. Gone are the days when bathroom remodeling and designing were confined to the tiles, painting ideas, accessories, tiles and curtains. More and more people are becoming increasingly aware of the various walk in shower themes and find no reason not to try them. They have become hugely popular in the US and European countries and is slowly catching up in some Asian countries as well. There are numerous advantages associated with opting for such bathroom designs. Undoubtedly, they bring about a uniqueness and class to your bathroom, not to mention the luxury of a spacious shower.

One might think that such a design is going to need a lot of space and you might have to increase the area of your bathroom. But, the fact is that by adopting a walk in shower theme for your bathroom, you are actually saving a lot of space. Such a theme allows you to have a separate wet room since you need only a small area for your showering cubicle. It only needs to be big enough for one person to shower comfortably.

However, there are quite a few things that you should keep in mind before going ahead with the installation of such a theme in your bathroom. You should provide enough space so that you can have a spacious and convenient shower. Allow proper time for all the accessories to get set. Most people tend to use glass as the enclosure as it has numerous advantages. It is easier to clean the water droplets off the glass surface and it can look new every time you clean the glass surface. If you already have a bathroom, you can easily install this structure into it. This will save you a lot of money when compared to redesigning the whole structure. Always pay attention to the slightest sign of wearing off. Make sure that the adhesives used are strong and in place. Don't hesitate to do maintenance works regularly.

There are a wide variety of designs that you can choose from. You can select one which suits your style, taste and budget. One of the most popular and common themes is the Rustic theme. They are very economical and serve the purpose well. They are easy to install and the maintenance is cost is affordable.

The next is the Tiles theme which uses either the ceramic or granite type. However, this type of design requires more space than the Rustic theme. The next in line is the Door less design which gives the appearance of a very spacious shower area. Glass is used for the enclosure and hence is a very attractive option. If you have ample budget, you should try the Spa or Zen theme. As the name suggests, you can have your own spa at your house. You can add scented candles to add to the mood of the shower. You can experience a steam bath while listening to your favorite music. You can easily select a walk in shower theme from any of the above according to your requirement.

But, the fact is that by adopting a walk in shower theme for your bathroom, you are actually saving a lot of space.

How To Pack For Cruise Travel

You know what you want to pack as far as your wardrobe for your cruise vacation, but here are the little essentials that you might not think about.

One very important thing to pack is a Wall Mount Power Outlet with 3 Outlets. Electrical Outlets in the cruise cabins are very stingy and if you want to dry your hair while your curlers are heating up you will have a problem.

When I pack, I put all of my clothes in Dry Cleaners plastic bags. These will keep your clothes from wrinkling. Pack anything that can spill in zip lock bags. An international power converter and a currency converter will be needed for European Cruises. Some people pack a night light for the bathroom. I have found if you leave the bathroom light on and close the door it is sufficient to guide you there in the middle of the night.

We pack a portable CD player with 20 CD's and an alarm clock. We pack "two way" radios so we can communicate when we are in different parts of the ship. I like to sleep in when we go to the Caribbean and John likes to get up and have breakfast. He quietly lets himself out of the cabin, and when I get up I call him to let him know its "safe" to come back to the room.

In colder climates you will need a jacket and some long sleeve shirts. I always pack sturdy hiking boots if we go to Europe or Alaska. (Most of the time I wear them on the airplane with slacks since they take up so much room in the suitcase). They come in very handy when touring Europe's sometimes centuries old cobblestone streets. When you go to Europe you will probably visit churches, and other religious buildings and proper attire must be worn-no sleeveless tops, no shorts and in some places a head covering. In Thailand it was necessary to remove our shoes before entering their holy places. You are in some else's country and must abide by their rules. No matter where you are headed remember that cabins are small and have little closets and drawers. This is an important fact to know when you are packing.

Bring all of your toiletries, film, in-cabin wine, lotions, medications and dental care products from home. They will be quite pricey on the ship. If you have an on going medical problem have your doctor write a brief medical history so you can supply it to the ships doctor if a problem should arise. You should also pack things like, Alka Seltzer, constipation relief, cough drops, aspirin and band aids. Make up a little first aid kit that suits your needs. Don't laugh, you will probably be trying new foods, eating more than usual, and you never know how you will react. Those items mentioned above are expensive on the ship.

A few things that are handy are clothes pins for weighing down the shower curtain (the showers are small and the curtain will stick to you when your wet. This really gives me the creeps). A highlighter is great for highlighting the activities on your daily cruise sheet. The night before highlight the events you want to participate in and all you have to do is glance at the sheet to know where you want to be and when. Tell your room steward on the first day to leave you two daily cruise sheets so each of you will have one. This way if one of you wants to go to the wine tasting and the other wants to join in the art auction you both know where and when. Then when it's over, call each other on the two way radios and meet up for a drink or lunch or whatever. Another valuable little item is "post it notes" if you don't have the two way radios. Just write on the post it where you are going and at what time and then stick on the outside of the cabin door. Presto your traveling partner knows where you are and when to expect you back. This is great for parents traveling with children.

Cruise Tip: Pack business cards with your email address on them. You meet all kinds of interesting people that you will want to stay in touch with. Some of our best friends are people we met on cruises, friends we continue to cruise with. I like to pack computer generated address labels to make it easy to send postcards.

I read this tip in several cruise reviews. Send a postcard to yourself. I have postcards from all over the world with the local stamps that I have sent to our home during each of our exotic cruises. I have a stamp from the CCCP - that was the USSR- years ago. Its fun and you will always get a chuckle when the post card catches up to you after you are home.

It is a smart thing to bring along your cell phone (which means the charger too). If you incur delays you can call your Travel Agent and have her call the cruise lines. You can make phone calls while you're leaving port on the ship, and in some islands. The islands I have found to be cell phone friendly are the Bahamas, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Grand Cayman. It's great for phoning for a cab to the airport, or getting in touch with friends when you disembark. On the islands that do provide service you won't have to wait in long lines (pay phones on the islands is where the crew keeps in touch with home). It's just a handy thing to do and would be invaluable in an emergency.

Please don't forget a good sunscreen if you are going to the Caribbean. If you are from the colder climes and have not seen the sun in awhile you will NEED it. Even in Alaska you have to wear a sunscreen.

Lastly, don't forget your camera. Put this in your carry on, do not pack it. I have a friend that went to Hawaii and video taped a wedding, packed the camera in her luggage and it was stolen on the way home. If it is digital camera take extra memory cards since you will be taking lots of pictures and the cards are more expensive once you leave home.

Follow this advice and you will have a very enjoyable and comfortable cruise.

Happy Cruising!

Rustic Country Decor - How to Decorate Cottage Style Homes

Rustic country decor and how to decorate cottage style homes are extensions of American country style decorating. In addition, traditions are borrowed from French, English and some Swedish country looks. Rustic country decor can be defined as coarse, charmingly simple, unfussy, unfinished and yet with endearing qualities. Rustic country decorating includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Cottage style homes are comfortable, modest, quaint homes that can be made of thick stone or log wood.

Floors in rustic country decor and cottage style homes are made with stone or wood materials. Wooden floors were traditionally constructed with boards that were bare and simply waxed and hand-polished (high-gloss varnishes did not exist). Sometimes the boards were painted with light colors. If you like floor coverings, use oriental rugs and throws for visual warmth and color. Rustic country decor is about handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you enjoy and connecting back to nature.

Rustic cottage furniture is commonly made with pine and perhaps painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. Use ladderback chairs, rocking chairs, benches, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. A large rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. To give your furniture a rustic look, brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, apply wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfect and rustic looking!

Baskets can be used to store wood, pine cones, flowers, plants and needlework. Brass candle holders, oil or kerosene lamps, sconces, hurricane lamps, tin lanterns, recessed ceiling fixtures or a vintage wrought-iron or metal chandelier provide successful lighting for rustic country decor and cottage style homes. Colors used in rustic country decor or cottage style homes are neutral tones ranging from white to bone, earth tones, red barn, blues and greens.

For rustic country decor in the kitchen, use open shelves, hutches, buffets, plate racks and cupboards for storage. Often, country kitchen storage is crammed with stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and glass jars. Kitchen pots should be made of copper, steel or cast iron -- cookware tends to be large and plain. Use open shelving in the rustic country kitchen to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Natural woods, light colors and bright fabrics work great for window treatments. Adding a rustic butcher block island creates a wonderful visual effect as well as provides useful functionality.

A rustic country decor bathroom has neutral tones or soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting, and wooden antiques or antique reproduction cabinets and vanity. Knowing how to decorate cottage style homes and bathrooms can result in creating a calm and elegant atmosphere. Clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, country style antique brass faucets and old-fashioned country cabinets provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there. Plain white towels are recommended instead of patterned or bright modern patterns. Use wicker or wire baskets to keep your sponges, loofas and shampoos handy near the tub or shower.

Understanding how to decorate cottage style homes means including items like quilts, antique furniture or reproductions, flea-market pieces, trunks, chests, armoires, stenciling, wallpaper, adirondack chairs, flower wreaths and bistro chairs. These types of elements give cottage style homes the kind of rustic country decor that is simpler, very personal and warmly inviting.

Whether in a seaside setting, an urban environment, a countryside location or a wooded mountain retreat, cottage style homes are cozy and unassuming, combining the past with the present. Read all you can find and learn what creating the rustic country cottage means to you no matter where it's located. Enjoy expressing your personality and showing what the definition of home means to you.

A Collection of Weird Massage Stories

Whenever I travel somewhere in Asia I always try out a local massage for better or for worse. Sometimes it was definitely for the worse, and here are some of my more bizarre experiences.

Bangkok massage trauma:

I went to the tourist district on Kao San Road in Bangkok and went to a typical Thai massage shop. Many floor mats were lined up in a big room with many sessions going on simultaneously. I ended up with a male therapist. The first thing he did was turn on a fan that blew cold air on me in a room that was already air conditioned to arctic temperatures. When I told him that the fan made me cold, he insisted that he needed it since he felt hot.

A few minutes after he started my massage he got up and started to prepare a pot of tea. When he was done he came back to me and continued the massage without any explanation. A few minutes later another client was done with his session. Apparently my therapist was the main cashier since he got up and collected the money from him. Again he returned without offering any explanation and kept working on me.

At this point I felt like getting up and walking out. But I decided to stay just to see how far this could go. And incredibly enough the fellow kept stopping my massage every time someone needed to pay for their session. His main job was cashier and he also did massages as an afterthought it seemed. I felt like I was a piece of meat being pushed around mindlessly, I was freezing, and I even had to pay for the abuse.

Luang Prabang, Laos - What Kind of Oil is that?

I went to a massage shop in Luang Prabang to get an oil massage. There was nothing wrong with the session, but when I took a shower afterward to wash the oil off my body, I realized that the oil did not come off. After three rounds of soap and water, I decided they must have used petroleum mixed with super glue, because I still felt greasy and sticky. Soap and water had no chance against this incredible massage oil. It managed to prolong my experience way past the one hour session that I paid for.

Burma 'Hole-in-the-Wall' Massage

I was traveling in Burma and one evening I was excited when I saw a sign for a massage shop. I signed up for a session and was directed to a wall with a curtain. When they pulled the curtain aside, I saw a cut-out in the wall. It was a rectangular hole in the wall with the dimensions of a coffin, just higher. A super thin mat rested on regularly spaced pieces of wood. The effect was that the mat was sagging in all the spaces between the wooden slats and the slats dug themselves into my back.

A little old man showed up and I was wondering how he could give me a massage in a space that was just big enough to accommodate my own body. Somehow he managed to climb over me and squeeze himself in a squatting position between my legs. He pulled the curtain shut and did some pressing and squeezing on some parts of my body that he could reach from his contorted position. I would have gotten up and walked out, but I wanted to experience it just for the weirdness of it. After the session my body felt worse than before, but I had another memorable travel experience.

Vietnamese Massage with Happy End Offer

I was in Hanoi and wanted to experience a Vietnamese massage. Since I had heard dubious reports about massage shops in Vietnam, I went to the tourist office and stated that I was looking for a real massage without any sexy content in a classy establishment. They gave me the name and address of a spa. When I arrived there, it looked very clean and professional: nice reception, private massage room with individual saunas, uniformed therapists, and the massage was actually quite good.

Towards the end of the session, the girl put her hands on my private parts and asked if I wanted massage there. I declined and got up to get dressed. Before I left, she put her hand on my arm and asked what I was going to do now. To her disappointment I told her that I would go home - alone. She must have seen her big tip vanish and I hurried to get out of there.

Later I asked a Vietnamese friend of mine if there was such a thing as purely professional therapeutic massage. He told me that there was not much of a market for such incomplete work, since most Vietnamese men prefer the "happy end".

Bali - Younger Therapists

I was walking on the street in the city of Kuta and was accosted by a girl who wanted me to sign up for a massage. As a massage therapist myself, I am always interested in massage, so I followed her. She led me to a dingy and unclean room that would have been the last place where I ever wanted to receive a massage. So I turned on my heels and walked out. She chased me down and pleaded with me: "Mister, wait, we will give you a younger and prettier girl!"

I guess she did not know that my personal rule for female massage therapists in Asia is that the older and less attractive ones are generally the more experienced and more professional ones. If she would have said: "Mister, wait, we give you an old and ugly one and we will put clean sheets on the table", she might have had a chance, but she blew it with her offer.

Chiang Mai Belly Attack

I went to get a massage at a shop that is known for therapeutic work. An older woman who seemed quite experienced got to work on me. Everything was fine until she got to my belly area. There she started to press really hard with thumbs and elbows which was registered by my tummy as very painful.

So in a natural effort of self-preservation I kept my stomach muscles tense enough so that she could not do any serious damage. When she was done with the massage, she told me in a concerned voice that I had real issues in my belly area since I was so tense in there. She advised me to go see a doctor and come back to her for regular belly treatments.

Luckily most Thai massage therapists don't touch the belly. Otherwise I might end up needing a surgical belly replacement.

I have to say that later I received excellent massages in very professional settings in Bali, just to set the record straight. In Thailand I have received countless wonderful massages, and I have not totally given up on Vietnamese massage either. I will try again on my next trip, but then I will go with my girlfriend, just to be on the safe side.

Mercedes Sprinter Camper Van - Designing and Building Your Custom Sprinter RV Conversion

You've seen many tradesmen drive by in a Mercedes Sprinter cargo van, and you've realized that it would make a great small Sprinter camper van or Sprinter RV conversion. What now? There are many smaller custom conversion companies in the US which can convert Sprinters for you into a custom Sprinter RV conversion at a price lower than the typical class "B" Sprinter RV. However, even these small companies will charge at least US,000 for a fully-converted Sprinter RV, which is far above what the typical camper van used to cost.

If you are mechanically apt, you might consider the option of building your own custom Sprinter RV conversion. You can contract others to do some of the more specialized work, and do the simpler work yourself. By building your own, you can guarantee that the configuration matches your needs, at a price that you can afford. Since Mercedes Sprinter vans have been in widespread use in North America now for almost a decade, it's easy to find used Mercedes Sprinter cargo vans on eBay, Craigslist or other online auto trading/auto sales sites. Camper equipment for your conversion is also easy to find from many retailers online.

One note of caution - Though you will probably have no problem registering your DIY Sprinter conversion with the county motor vehicles department as an RV, many insurance companies will not insure a do-it-yourself conversion of a Sprinter van as a recreational vehicle. You may want to contact your insurance company to see if this is an issue - if it is, another option is to design your conversion yourself, and find a local conversion company who can build the conversion for you, and invoice you accordingly. The invoice may be sufficient for the "proof of value" that many insurance companies require to value an RV.

Buying a New or Used Mercedes Sprinter
If you are looking to buy a new or used Mercedes Sprinter as the base vehicle for your Mercedes Sprinter camper van, you have several choices to make:

  • New or used? A new van will come with a steeper price tag, but also a full warranty. However, many older used vans can be had for a good price, if you know what to look for, and what to avoid. When buying used, have a certified mechanic check out your Mercedes Sprinter before you buy, and look up any mechanical issues for that year. Also, remember that a vehicle as large as a Sprinter may cost US0-2000 to ship cross-country.
  • What size? Used Mercedes Sprinters may come in 118-inch, 140-inch, 144-inch, 158-inch and 170-inch wheelbases. The longer the wheelbase, the heavier the vehicle - 170-inch wheelbase vans often weigh almost 11,000 lbs. If you want to spend any time off-road in your Mercedes Sprinter camper van, consider the smaller wheelbase sizes. If you want a shower and/or toilet in your camper, then you may need large hot water and wastewater tanks, as well as the space for the shower and toilet themselves, which may drive you to choose a larger-wheelbase model.
  • What year? 2002-2010 Mercedes Sprinters are all widely available, each with slightly different features and engine choices. It may be worth paying more up front for a lower-mileage Mercedes Sprinter than paying later for new brakes, tires, transmissions, etc.
  • Negotiating tactics - There are plenty of Mercedes Sprinters for sale. Narrow in on a year, model and price that you want, then contact dealers and private individuals all across North America. When they respond, ask each of them if they can match the price of your lowest offer.

Design Considerations for Your Mercedes Sprinter RV Conversion

So you made your plans to build your own custom Sprinter RV conversion, and now you are the proud owner of a new or used Mercedes Sprinter cargo van, just waiting for you to make some decisions about how to convert it into a Sprinter camper van. First there are the major decisions to make:

  • How many will it sleep? 2, 3, 4? How will the sleeping berths be arranged? There are several layouts that make sleeping 4 possible - for example, you can have a rear dinette with bench seats on each side that converts into a 2-person bed, and a bench seat up front that folds down flat into another 2-person bed. Or, you might want to have just fold-down panels/bunks or folding slats for one or both of the beds, so the beds can be easily stowed or removed.
  • Will you camp in campgrounds, or "dry-camp" in the woods ("boondocking")? If you'll be camping in campgrounds or RV parks, you might want AC electrical hookups (for "shore power" provided by the campground or RV park). If you intend to be mostly boondocking, you might want to have a 12-volt DC electrical system powered by solar panels, and run your appliances off the power that provides.
  • How much food storage do you need, both for dry food and refrigerator space?
  • What do you want to use for fuel, especially for cooking and heating? The Mercedes Sprinter is a turbodiesel van, so it uses only diesel (and/or biodiesel) fuel, and it is possible to use a diesel cooktop, and 12-volt diesel-powered air heaters, rather than have a propane system, including a huge propane tank, propane cooktop and propane furnace - this can save you a lot of weight in your conversion.
  • Do you plan to go off-road much, or on rough roads? If so, you should consider changing the stock tires out for some beefier versions with a tread designed for off-road traction. You should also make sure not to have running boards on your conversion, as these will reduce your ground clearance.
  • A small solar system may be more convenient than a generator as backup power. It may also cost less, weigh less, and it's definitely quieter! One to four solar panels will easily fit on the roof of the Sprinter, and with an RV solar charge controller and some deep-cycle AGM batteries, you have a portable power system that can provide you with plenty of electric power, especially in the sunnier states and provinces.

When you've made these major decisions, these can lead you to make more choices about the following items of camping equipment that you might want for your Mercedes Sprinter camper van:

  • Refrigerator (3-way, 2-way, DC-only?)
  • Stove/cooktop (Diesel, propane, magnetic induction?)
  • Air heater (Diesel air heater, propane furnace?)
  • Beds (Bunks, fold-down, pop-top, folding bench seat/sofa bed?)
  • Insulation (Spray foam, fiberglass batts, rigid foam?)
  • Flooring (Hardwood, laminate, vinyl?)
  • RV windows (Fixed, opening with screens & shades, skylights?)
  • Window coverings (Blinds, shades, curtains, stick-on, button-on?)
  • Ventilation (Screened windows, powered fans?)

Hopefully, when all this equipment is installed and your Sprinter camper van is finished, you'll be more than satisfied with the results. A custom Sprinter RV conversion you built yourself!
